Travel Information
Towson United Girls Soccer program is a volunteer parent organization. Most of our travel coaches have played or coached at the collegiate, club, or high school level. The majority of these same coaches hold USSF, NSCAA licenses or both.
Our travel program participates in the CMSA (Central Maryland Soccer Association League), and EDP (Elite Development Program) which are USSF affiliated through the Soccer Association for Youth (SAY) and US Club Soccer respectively. We currently have 18 teams of talented soccer players and intend to grow our program.
Travel Soccer is a year-round sport with emphasis on the Fall season when we encourage players to focus their commitment to the team. During the Fall season, most travel teams will participate in a pre-season tournament, league games, mid- season tournament and a post-season tournament.
Teams participate in winter indoor programs and spring outdoor league play. These additional opportunities to play include winter Futsal League games, spring tournaments, and spring league games.
The older age groups (U15-U19) will participate in Spring showcase tournaments to prepare the girls who would like to play in college and give them exposure.
Program Description
Travel Team Tryouts
Travel team evaluations are scheduled to take place during the month of May each year. There are tryouts every year for placement on teams. Travel teams are formed at each age level: U8 – U19 depending on Coach and team commitment. Players currently on teams also have to try out every year.
Team selection is based on tryout results as well as performance in training and games during the course of the previous season. There exists the possibility that an interested player will not be selected for a team. There also exists the possibility that a returning player changes teams (up or down) based on their performance the past season.
The number of teams entered will depend on the number of interested players meeting travel requirements. Towson United Soccer strives to enter multiple teams in each age group and player development is the key objective.
Procedure & Fees
Players must register and complete the on-line waiver to participate in Towson travel evaluations. If your daughter is selected to play for a travel team, travel fees will be collected after team selection and before the first practice. If your daughter is not selected to play on a travel team, she will have the opportunity to register to play in our recreation league.
Travel fees, which are significantly more than in-house team fees, can be paid in full or with an installment plan. Additionally, Towson United travel players new to the program will need to purchase a New Player Kit which consists of uniforms (home and away), socks, and shorts.
Travel Soccer versus Recreational Soccer
Towson United Travel Soccer provides an increased level of commitment and cost. The travel teams play in a more competitive environment with a greater level of skill. Players must try out to make the travel team; whereas all players who register to play recreational soccer are placed on a team.
Towson United Soccer offers opportunities to play in both the Central Maryland Soccer Association, The Baltimore Beltway Soccer League and EDP. Depending on the skill level, a team may play in a "Classic" ("C" level) league, which is reserved for the first level of travel, a "Challenge ("B" level) league which is a higher skill level or a "Premier" ("A" level) league, which is the highest level of play and skill.
Unlike recreational soccer, equal playing time on a travel soccer team is not guaranteed. We strive, however, to find the optimum team size for each age group so that your child gains adequate playing time for fun and skill development.
Travel teams practice two nights per week in addition to their weekly game schedule. Travel teams play against teams throughout the Central and Southern Maryland area as well as (at the highest level) into PA, DE and WV. Travel time to some fields will be 40-120 minutes at the furthest.
Fall Season
Practices begin shortly after team selection in mid June, usually once a week through the summer and twice per week beginning in mid-August. Games begin in late August and last through mid/late November. Tournament play should be expected.
Coaches
We are always looking for qualified coaches! Travel coaches are expected to have a higher level of soccer knowledge than recreational soccer coaches. Travel coaches also will find their time commitment is roughly double that of a recreational league coach. Coaches new to the Towson United Travel program should hold a MSYSA Class E coaching license or above. TRC will pay for the Travel team head coach to become Class E licensed. If interested, please contact the Program Chair for Towson United Travel Soccer.
